HISTORY OF R/C: In 1893 a scientist by the name of Nikola Tesla invented
a boat that was controlled by radio waves.
In 1871 a Frenchman by the name of Alphonse Penaud created the very
first R/C airplane. The plane flew 131 feet and led many to believe that
powered flight for humans was possible. Later on in WII both the Germans
and the Allies attempted to use R/C technology for military use.
The R/C car had its official birth sometime in the mid 1960's. The creators
used a small two-stroke engine that was used to power an R/C airplane.
In 1967 a company by the name of Wen, Dynamic Models and Model Car
Enterprises released the first mass produced R/C Car.
Today there is a wide range of R/C vehicles available. These vehicles
include, planes, helicopters, blimps, hover craft, tanks, cars, trucks, boats
and even submarines. Some of these vehicles are gas ( Nitro ) powered,
while a vast number are now electric. The electric versions of these R/C
vehicles use rechargeable batteries and are less expensive.
If its your first time buying a higher-end R/C vehicle there's a lot to
consider. Both gas and electric power have there advantages and
disadvantages. There are several factors you will want to consider.
1. Where you live. If you live in the city or busy neighborhood, you may
want to consider buying an electric R/C. The gas powered vehicles tend to
be a bit loud. Electric R/C's are fairly quiet by comparison. If you're
planning to use your R/C somewhere else, then don't worry about it.
2. Do you have mechanical skills ? If you don't have the time, patience, or
skills to build your R/C then you'll want a ready to use R/C. In the R/C
plane and helicopter world, this is called an (R.T.F) or Ready To Fly.
3. Do you have any R/C flight experience ? If the answer to this one is no,
you may wish to join a local R/C club. The members of these clubs are
always happy to help you out. They will keep you from crashing that
expensive Corsair you just purchased. Check out our Hobby Club Locater
on the Home Page.
4. In's and out's of Electric and Nitro Power. Basically gas powered
vehicles are loud and can be a bit of work. The up side to these vehicles
is that they are fun to take apart and modify. If you love to tune engines
and install upgrades, you'll love Nitro's.
Electric R/C's are much more quiet, and require less maintenance. These
days electrics run almost as long on their gas powered counterparts on
each battery. Most electric R/C users buy extra batteries and bring a
charger to recharge the used ones.
Now that you know a little bit more about R/C you're on your way.
