HISTORY OF THE CANDLE
The candle is well over 5,000 years old. While its origins are in
dispute, many historians believe that the candle was developed by
the ancient Egyptians. It is believed that the Egyptians first used
reeds dipped in animal fat to light the way.
Historians believe that the Egyptians were using wax candles around
3,000 years ago. However, the Romans are believed to have been
making candles from bee's wax and papyrus even earlier than that.
The Chinese people used rice paper and wax made from insects and
seeds. The Japanese used wax made from nuts as well.
During the middle ages Europeans used (tallow) animal fat for wax.
In England and France Candlers would travel from home to home
making candles out of fats saved by the home owners. Some Candlers
even set up their own small shops to sell their wares.
During Colonial times, it was discovered that boiling berries from the
Bayberry bush produced wax. This Bayberry wax was clean burning
and pleasant to smell. However, the process of boiling the berries
was so tedious that the method soon died off.
Today candles are a major industry. Candles are used in religious
ceremonies, as well as restaurants and homes. Scented candles are
especially popular these days.
